JEDDAH--The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has
condemned the reported military intervention today and the illegal arrest and
detention in Ouagadougou of the President, the Prime Minister and some
Ministers of the Transitional Government in Burkina Faso by elements of the
Presidential Guard.
The Secretary General of the OIC, Iyad
Ameen Madani, expressed grave concern at this serious development coming less
than a month to the planned general elections to hand over power to an elected
government.
He added, "Those behind this
misadventure that risks throwing the country into an unnecessary political
crisis, would be held to account." Madani described the coup d'etat and
the hostage taking by the Presidential Guard as a "blatant violation of
the constitution and the transitional charter." He called for the
immediate and unconditional release of the detained leaders.
The Secretary General, while reaffirming the full solidarity
of the OIC as a member of the International Follow and Support Group of the
Transition in Burkina Faso, assured the internationally recognised Transitional
authorities under President Michel Kafando and Prime Minister Issac Yacouba
Zida of the commitment of the Organisation to support the successful conclusion
of the political transition. -end-
